to reach a tax-and-spending deal in washington. the president just spoke at length about negotiations and we'll get to that in a moment. but earlier we heard a stern warning for uncle sam, meaning all of us, from one of the world's leading credit rating agencies. fix the fiscal crisis or risk a downgrade. fitch warning again that it may strip the united states of its aaa credit rating if washington is unable to strike a deal to avert these big tax hikes and spending cuts that we're going to see at the end of this year and also to allow borrowing to rise. now this is not the first time we've heard of these warnings or have seen america's credit take a hit. in 2011, standard & poor's cut its u.s. rating to double a from aaa blaming political brinkmanship for preventing on a agreement on raising the debt ceiling. we heard the president talk about the standoff in debt negotiations, a deal our stuart varney said is raising red flags. here is what he had to say earlier on his show. >> right after the election the boss of big labor, richard trumka led a delegation of leftists into the white

are only in washington because they want to destroy washington. so mostly when you hear rhetoric like that from the right, it is ideological posturing. if it were a real governing philosophy of the republican party, the government would not always get larger under republican presidents the way it does. but there is one part of government where that sort of attitude, the get it down to the size where you can drown it in the bathtub attitude is not just empty right-ring branding and hyperbole. there is one part of governance at the federal level where the conservative movement has actually succeeded in making government small enough to drown it in the bathroom at home that part of governance still technically exists, but they have hollowed it out and sucked the life out of it. they have made so it weak, it cannot properly function, and nobody expects it to. and you can tell what what part of governance they have done this to with one simple test. find any other federal agency in the united states government when on the day that the president of the united states at a live nationally tel

in washington which i am frankly puzzled by. congress, the legislative branch, has five tools -- proceedingses, oversight, legislation, communication by all of its members and negotiation. negotiation's the weakest of the five tools. i frankly wish the house republicans would go home, relax, they voted to stop a middle-class tax increase f. harry reid wanted to stop it in the senate, that's fine. the president wants to veto it, that's fine. this is not a crisis that will end the republic. it's a mess. i wish we would go back to open negotiations, to open hearings, to open markups. letting the american people see the process, i think negotiating in secret in the white house, producing a $1 trilln, $2 trillion deal in the next 10 days i think is the worst possible outcome. >> to me, i have been surprised because they have known this was coming for a year. yet, seems like after the election, nobody had any plan. the republicans have been in the cul-de-sac. i keep thinking, why aren't they blaming president obama and senator reid for the -- for not bringing the democrats along, which was the point
